“A Mississippi Mills Christmas Carol” pokes puppet-y fun At Charles Dickens’ classic – and the mayor
The sparkling holiday show is a two-night-only fundraiser for Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival
From the creative team behind the acclaimed Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival comes a special holiday treat: A Mississippi Mills Christmas Carol, which features a cast of 48 puppets, a live choir, eight puppeteers and three live actors in a cheeky adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic, served up with a local twist.
Each of the 48 puppets are look-alike caricatures of local residents and each has a role in the story: audiences will see Shaun McLaughlin, the Mayor of Mississippi Mills, in puppet-form as Mr. Fezziwig, plus CBC Radio’s gardening expert Ed Lawrence voicing his own puppet as The Ghost of Christmas Past, among many other local cameos.
A Mississippi Mills Christmas Carol runs for two nights only: Friday, December 16 and Saturday December 17 at 7:30pm in the Ron Caron Auditorium of the historic Almonte Old Town Hall on Bridge Street. Before each show, guests will be treated to a mini-concert of holiday music by guitarist Ric Denis and clarinetist Tony Stuart.
Allan Martin, a puppeteer and the Chair of the Board of Directors for Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival, wrote the script based on Dickens’ classic, and has given the story lots of local twists and references.
Each puppet is handmade by Noreen Young, the Artistic Director of Puppets UP!, and an award-winning puppeteer, puppet builder, and television producer, and a Member of the Order of Canada. Noted costume designer Ingrid Harris, whose work was recently featured at the National Gallery of Canada as part of the NGC’s Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun exhibit, has created Victorian clothing for all 48 puppets and the actors.
The production of A Mississippi Mills Christmas Carol is a fundraiser for the Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival, a three-day celebration of theatre, music and whimsy that brings tens of thousands of people to Almonte every August.
Tickets for A Mississippi Mills Christmas Carol are $25 and are available online at puppetsup.ca/tickets and at Mill Street Books and Baker Bob’s in Almonte. The show is recommended for audiences aged 16 and older.
